I am glad to hear you are O.K.  What a freaky experience!  I don't recall
ever being in the middle of a fire while hiking.. Unless you count falling
into the campfire.. : )  

It sounds like you have the spirit that I hope to have and retain!
I have yet to do some solo backpacking.  Not sure I'll enjoy it either. 
Thanks for the story and the laughs about your response to the sheriff!
