I'll stop lurking to add a question onto the previous post.
With the need to cautiously ration water in certain areas, is it hard to
judge consumption with the platypus type hydration system? This is my only
concern about using a bladder that can't be directly visualized while
hiking.

Since I tie my Playpus on top, I can easily reach up and feel it.  But I
*am* a bit worried about drinking too much too fast in dry areas (note that
I estimate a 50% increase in consumption when not *trying* to limit
consumption).  OTOH, you can take very small sips to keep your mouth
moist...much easier than sipping from a canteen.  I plan to carry an extra
platic bottle just incase...
