I don't totally disagree with the logic about YOUR water requirements, but 
individual needs WILL vary. It is difficult to find a formula that works for 
all. 

To imply that carrying "2-3 gallons is adequate for the longest dry sections" 
may create a false sense of security for some hikers. First of all, anyone 
that thinks he/she CAN carry that much water in addition to their full pack 
should try it at home (around the block, perhaps). Remember that water weighs 
~ 8 pounds per gallon. Are YOU prepared to carry 16 to 24 extra pounds 
through any section? 

Your advice to hike when the temps are lower is much more practical.
