[pct-l] Btu,s

You can cook with a candle if you want on Pct , but to say butane and propane
has more btu,s per weight is just hogwash. Butane burns and gives off 2 carbon
molicules while propane kicks off 3 , but white gas gives off a whoping 8
molicules. Kerosene has more energy that all per weight. vAccording to the
backpacker annu;; gear mag. ,a new coleman exteme stove will burn 11oz of fuel
in 60 minutes at full speed, so Chris Bailey must just use his stove 5 and a
half minutes a day to make his canister last 11 to 12 days, Humm. Bic stoves
are used on everest only because of the lightness factor and they will burn
above 20,000 ft, at 0 degrees ( better than at 10,000ft. and 0 degrees) If you
look at base camp pictues, you will see sherpa,s cooking with old Optimus
Kerosene stoves. Where were some of you open-minded ultra-lights in 1977
before this trail became so pasturized? Many were walking out the door to
school with their Star Wars lunch boxes. In 1977, only 18 people had ever thu-
hiked this trail with many sections of trail just dead ending at some hemlock
five miles from connecting to anything. This makes it hard to swallow advice
from these Johnny come latelys on this list. You should give some of us old-
timers on this list maybe a little more heed. I still hike and climb as much
as many of you younger folks with one or two years more hiking under my belt (
or 10 or 20 in some cases.) If someone tells you it can snow in July, you
should listen. If you want to climb Forester with a tank top and a beach
towel, go for it , but if your toes get a little cold and fall off , I,ll be
here to say Humm. Monte ( the narrow minded jerk from the past )
