[pct-l] California Snow Report #2

The trail south of Mount Whitney has much less than average snow. From
Mount Whitney to Tolumne Meadows the snow build up from less to somewhat
less than normal. North of Tolumne the snow appears normal.

The real snow season is just starting. In BIG snow years the next month
shows huge increases in snow. In light months the accumulation over the
next month was small.

Of more interest is when the snow melts. There is a variation of TWO months
[June 1 to August 1] in the historical data. Other concerns are the runoff
volumes for the various water crossings. In neither case do we know about
1999 yet.

My best scientific wild ass guess is that the average person with an ice
axe could traverse the Sierra leaving Kennedy Meadows July 4th.

Standard disclaimers apply. Thanks to Mark Dixon. His page makes this a lot
easier.
