If you want to approach Mt. Whitney from the west (Crabtree Meadows), one way
to do that is to hike in from Horseshoe Meadows / Cottonwood Pass out of Lone
Pine. See the PCT Guide, page 233, map G13. 

You can see the trail switchbacking up towards Horseshoe Meadows from PJ's
Restaurant in Lonepine.

I believe that would be a shorter hike (~ 21 miles) than to come in from Onion
Valley (perhaps 50 miles).
