RE: [pct-l] BOUNCE Non-member submission from [natalie long <nl ong1@d.umn.edu>]

I'm not a dog expert, but asked the same question earlier. Got a lot of
"dogs not suited for thru-hiking" mails, but no useful answers.

I learned a little this summer though.

Dogs are allowed on the whole PCT in both Washington and Oregon. So you
basically have to consider California as the problem.
As far as I know there aren't any service for handling dogs (like the
Smokies on the AT).
You have a prettty "good" chance of running into a ranger of two in the
national parks unless you're really out of season.
It's not easy to make the dog skip only the national parks because of few
roads.

Hiked with a dog (and a friend) for most of Washington. There are some
problems (that you might already be aware of):
Some (most) Motels dont allow dogs.
Buses dont allow dogs - except the bus into Stehekin were dogs are allowed!
Check what you need to take it into Canada. It's also possible to backtrack
to Harts pass and hitchike out from there. Might be difficult to get a ride
late in the season(??). Worked OK in late July.

On the othre hand:
Hitchiking with a dog didn't seem to be more difficult than without one!

Related to this question...have any of you thru-hiked with a dog??? I know
they are not allowed in certain parks..so where do you keep them, and how
do they meet back up with you?
