I was recently graduated from college when I did my thruhike, so there was
no career change for me (since I had none!). After the hike I worked in a
lumber yard for 2 years to pay off my college and PCT debts and then was a
Peace Corps Volunteer for 2 1/2 years (interestingly enough, more parallels
to a PCT thruhike than I would have thought).
When I finished the PCT in '82, I swore I'd never do another thruhike, but
would instead do 3-6 month "section" hikes so that I could enjoy the trail's
beauty more. But, as it turned out I ended up staying overseas for 10 years
and have never been able to get back onto one of the scenic trails, except
for day hikes now and then during short vacations back to Oregon. I do hope
to do either another thruhike or extended section hikes in the future with
my wife, but we'll see if that works out. In the meantime we do a lot of
day hiking here in Wisconsin and in Honduras when we return there to visit
(both are beautiful places with great people, for those of you who haven't
had the pleasure).
