I was up at Cedar Grove by the river on June 19th. The Kings river was
running incredible (as in intimidating!). Snow could only be seen on the
highest peaks in the canyon and I would estimate covering down to 9,000
feet or so. Even the north facing side of this canyon had little snow on
it for some reason, maybe warm winds push into this exceptionally deep
east-west canyon across the Sierra (or Nevadas, as the current discussion
evolves). It will be a long climb from Cedar Grove to an altitude where
you can use your gear. I'd suggest taking one of the higher roads in the
Kings Canyon NP to get to the ice and snow. Also, I don't think I have to
warn you about the high run off. The L.A. Times ran a article yesterday
that shows the run off rates of the major Sierra rivers. Everything is two
to three times normal rates for this time of year.
Anyone have more recent info on the Kings Canyon NP area?
All of the above, of course, in my most humble and untrustworthy opinion.
