[pct-l] Horseshoe Mdw Rd update
I just got this e-mail from BJ:
======================================================================
Hi --------!
Guess the pushy phone-calls worked [G]: the Horseshoe Meadow Road was
repaired yeasterday, and is driveable to a gate within a miles of the TH
turnaround. That means people can hike down to the gate and be picked up
by somebody waiting in a car at the other side. There's no place to
actually leave a vehicle at the gate (no off-road parking area of any
kind), so I think *hitching* a ride would be nearly impossible, but if a
thru-hiker can get a support-team member to cooperate, they'll avoid an
extra 12-20 mile walk. The FS is waiting for the snows to stop (it
snowed last night) to finish plowing the rest of the road; still pretty
much total snow cover up there.
Also total cover from the Lone Pine Lake turnoff on the Whitney
Trail, and so much snow around Kearsarge that only about 5-6 campsites
are cleared at the Onion Valley (road's end) CG; there's a huge cornice
on the Kearsarge Pass itself, so that usually "easiest pass in the
Sierra" *isn't* [G] right now. birgitte
