Hey Kelly!,
<snip.....There we found the old PCT trail and followed it ("Hurley Flats -
4 miles"), thinking we'd
make it to Cabazon by lunch.
Yea, looking at that section in my journal, I noted that it was burned-out
as well. I was with Ron, Cheryl, Jeanne and Joel thru that area and we lost
the trail in an area where some new fence construction was occurring. I
don't think we followed the old PCT after that, but followed an overgrown
jeep trail that switchbacked down to Cabazon. Your notes were just like mine
about only a 10 square foot area that was dry from those lawn sprinklers.
We were camped in the side yard of the fire station, next to the park. Its
side yard, back yard and the park had sprinklers going every hour. The only
dry spot was that size, behind the shed.
I didn't recognize any of the new names that you mentioned, but names now
tied to faces of those that hiked with Chris Townsend (the Animal, etc.).
Thanks for looking into that section of your journal, it was a big help and
really a lot of fun to read! You must have been right on my heals, because I
left Jeanne and Joel, Ron and Cheryl atop Mission Creek Canyon after lunch.
Ron was having stomach problems and all of them wanted to lay-over in Big
Bear. I continued solo that afternoon for the remainder of the trip. You
weren't the guy I met briefly in Whitewater were you? Tall, hiking solo?
Thanks!
Ken Marlow
