Kristian-

You would only be able to do a northbound hike if you could do the trail 
in 4 months: late April to late August.  A southbound hike would make 
much more sense since you generally wouldn't start until late June from 
the Canadian border.  This would allow you five months to complete the 
trail.  It all depends upon how much you want to challenge yourself.
