[pct-l] skewered dogs?

mark janowiak mentioned ice axe-ing dogs on the pct in '94 :) 

my question:  wasn't that fairly messy?  i mean, i know how dirty we all
get out there...but geez, that sounds like (no pun intended) overkill.
