[pct-l] pack and tent questions

I'm about to replace my old trail-worn tent and Gregory internal frame pack. 
Has anyone here tried (or know of someone who has) any of  The North Face's 
Alpha Series packs? Any opinion about that potentially gimmicky delrin rod? 
They claim the rod and accompanying suspension places the load over your 
center of gravity. If it works like they claim it does, it looks like it 
would have the same load bearing characteristics as the old Jansport and 
Adventure 16 external frame packs.
Also, has anyone tried any of the European tents, those with the aluminized 
flooring? The tents seem to be nearly as light as the U.S. tents. I wonder 
if this method of waterproofing is more durable as the coatings we use out 
here?
