Alan,
I resent this info to your AOL address but didn't hear back. We've seemed
to have better luck with the PCT-L.
Alan,
I've done a little footwork, determined your contacts and received some
background on how to present the proposal. Your initial e-mail discusses two
separate proposals, that of a story or series of stories about the National
Scenic Trails System, as well as a proposal for sales maps. Regarding the
sales maps, I spoke to our managing director, Allen Carroll about the
proposal. Your hunch was correct in that our recently acquired "Trails
Illustrated" could play a key role in the process. Allen mentioned that the
nature of the maps, is more in-line with what Trails Illustrated is
producing (in fact, I believe it was 1993 when they produced a continental
size map of the American Discovery Trail, showing the featured trail and how
it ties into the AT, Continental Divide, and Pacific Crest Trails). They
also have a series of state maps of the ADT, and made poster/map of the
Continental Divide Trail. The executive managers of Trails Illustrated are
Bill and Mary Kay Stoehr. They can be contacted by
mail at:
Trails Illustrated
P.O. Box 4357
Evergreen CO 80437-4357
(303) 670-3457
Trails Illustrated has an e-mail address, but it was recommended that using
the executive manager's individual addresses may be more effective. Bill's
and Mary's e-mail addresses then are:
bstoehr@aol.com
mkstoehr@aol.com
When contacting them, please mention that Allen Carroll suggested that you
contact them.
Regarding the story, Allen Carrol pointed me to the "Area Specialist for NGM
Editorial," Alice J. Hall. I spoke to her briefly regarding your proposal.
She said that there would be no need to contact other national scenic trail
associations, for the story proposal. And contrary to what I thought, the
number of interested parties would not help determine if a story made the
magazine. She went on to say that she schedules stories two years in advance
(contrary to my one year assumption),and that there is a story slated for
'98 from a similar request on Wild and Scenic Rivers. We were both unaware
of the date of the 30th anniversary of the National Scenic Trails Act. She
was concerned that the two year window might not make the date.
She also mentioned that the two proposals should be kept separate. She
would only be concerned with the magazine story proposal (this could include
page maps and a supplement map within the magazine). She said she couldn't
see a story directly or indirectly promoting a series of sales maps, or some
sort of spin-off (Thus the separate proposal with Trails Illustrated). She
said that a proposal, limited to one page, describing the National Scenic
Trails System and the significance (and date) of the 30th Anniversary of the
National Scenic Trails Act, is what she would want. Story proposals are
brought to a board, where it is determined if they are accepted, or not.
Alice Hall's address is:
Alice J. Hall, Area Specialist
National Geographic Society
1145 17th Street, NW
Washington D.C. 20036-4688
I can understand the reasons behind joining with other NST associations for
the proposals, particularly the sales maps, with the idea of a percentage of
the proceeds supporting these organizations. You might very well want to do
that for the proposal with Trails Illustrated. You may want to follow
Alice's advice for the magazine story proposal, however. When a story is put
together, editorial researchers, in the process would contact those
organizations for up to date information.
The idea sounds great! I share your enthusiasm, as I solo thru-hiked the PCT
in 1982. In fact it was a National Geographic Society book on the PCT that
began my dream of hiking the trail. The author and staff photographer Sam
Abel hiked the trail in that book, and both are still with us. Best of luck
in your proposals.
Sincerely,
Ken A. Marlow
