When I hiked the JMT a few years ago I carried almost all freeze-dried
foods. Here's a breakdown by meal for 30 days (dry weight):
Dinners avg wt 7.66 oz
Lunces 4.65
Breakfasts 4.32
Total 16.79 oz per day.
I also had 64 oz of alcohol and 7 oz of green olives.
Overall 19.23 oz per day for food and liquor.
I have no idea what the caloric value of this is. I can report that the
amounts were based on previous experience with 14-day trips.
I weigh in around 230 pounds.. lost 20 pounds in the course of the trip (4
weeks) ans was never unuusually hungry. I doubt if this diet could have
sustained me more than another couple of weeks.. for one thing it had
practically no fresh fruits or vegetables. I did take a vitamin C
supplement, but on later reflection it was probably not necessary.
