[pct-l] Puking Corn Pasta : Mexico to Canada in 2665 miles

Good book title huh? (Subj: line)

Ok moved to Portland, OR now, but the dust still hasn't settled. Once I
quit working 11 hour days I'll try and get my trip report from Mexico to
Highway 58 (Section F) that I did in Novemeber, and completed the trail for me.

> 1. Ice axes. Never used one on the whole trail. Probably should have
had one on Mather Pass.

>2. Boots - I preferred the Sacouny Running Shoes which I found on
clearance racks. Get a good 700-900 miles out of 'em. With the exception
of Washington when I wore my (yawn) $230 boots for 250 miles, I don't think
I spent over $23 for a pair of shoes for the entire trail. I even lucked
out and found a worn pair of good Nike running shoes in my size, on the
North side of Forrester Pass! Got about 150 miles out of them.

>3 Maps - Brick is right on this one. You must have the guidebooks or you
WILL get lost. No map will tell you that the trail begins again on the
other side of the road next to an abandonded car. I tore my guidebooks up,
but kept all the pages for reference purposes (plus I'm to cheap to shell
out another 50 dollars for books I will probably never use again).

As for Ray Jardine's book. Kind of think of it this way. You are new to
the world and can't pick up any girls (or guys). There are books to help
you out in your quest, but after awhile you realize you go with what you
know and the book becomes insignificant. I read Ray's book in 1994, but
looking back, I really didn't depend upon it at all. I did however find his
iteneries useful. Since I was a bit rushed towards the end and needed to
plot my arrival / parcel mail dates for my parents. I had 10 hours till my
plane left and STILL hadn't made up a quick schedule on where I would be
when. I looked at the 5 month schedule and adjusted it to the current date.
Boom Boom Boom I was done ..and it proved to be pretty accurate.

As of January 1st, 1997 the Salvage Logging Rider is no more! Though a
zillion sales were pushed through during the last couple of weeks of
December. One of which is/was a couple miles from the Eagle Creek Trail
(alternate waterfall route of Volume 2 Section G guidebook). I'm still
trying to find more details on it. There are still people in congress
trying to make the Salvage Loffing Rider permanent, so hold your breath. It
will probably just sneak up again, just like it did by being attached to the
Disaster Relief Bill for victims of the Oklahoma City bombing.

ps. If anyone is looking for some hi-carb corn pasta elbows, I can cut you
a great deal on some.
