Question - why are filters useful for a digital camera, compared to
editing
the photo on the computer, using Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or other
editing software?

The only filter that you can't easily reproduce in post-processing on a
computer is a polarizing lens. A polarizing lens doesn't just change
the whole scene, it selectively eliminates certain unwanted light while
allowing the rest through. It's most useful for eliminating shiny glare
from reflections off vegetation and water, and also for cutting through
haze and for deepening the color of the sky. In some conditions it can
make a dramatic difference that can't be duplicated on the computer.
