[pct-l] Mountain Boogie Man Strikes Whitney

Switchback, How are you going to explain to the ranger that you stayed
overnight on a day permit on your way down the next day?
Whitney corridor is the toughest for permits and bear cannisters. If you
stay overnight in the corridor without a cannister, they will cite you and
since you stayed overnight, they will cite you for not having an overnight
permit.
You could consider another much easier option. Instead of doing a 24 hr.
Whitney loop from Whitney Portal to Whitney and back. You could do a 24 hr.
loop from Guitar Lake to Whitney and back to Guitar Lake. There are several
advantages:
1. No problem getting permits for the Cottonwood trail
2. Take 3 days to get to Guitar to get somewhat acclimated
3. Leave all your heavy items, extra food, bear cannister, etc. in the bear
box at the Crabtree
ranger station on the way to Guitar Lake
4. Camp 1/2 - 3/4 miles past Guitar at a small campsite ( nobody seems to
camp there
because they think there is no water) close to 2 medium size lakes
that are not very
     visible from the trail
5. Now you are only about 4 1/2 miles from Whitney and you could do the
round trip easily in
one day. Or better yet, stay on top overnight and see the sunset &
sunrise back to back.

You don't have to worry about the ranger. They are never on top in the
evening.
