[pct-l] worldnomads & HElicopter Evac
About Helecopter evac.
I volunteer for SAR here in CA so I now how the helicopter transport and costs work (specific knowledge from "Cypress" who got Evacuated last year confirmed it).
Any back country Evac in Ca, the subject does not have to pay but rather tax payers fit the bill when IT IS A is sheriff operation. And in most cases it should be sheriff. If the subject is a CA resisdent then the county of residency pays the bill. For instance if you get evac from INYO county but you reside in San Diego --- San Diego pays fo the bill. If you are an out of state resident then the couty of evac fits the bill.
I have no knoweldge of SAR in OR or WA but this covers 2/3 of your thru hike adventure.
Idea here - is to be prepared ENOUGH NOT to need an EVAC but nice to know that we are more than willing to help ------ the more knowledge we have of your location, skills and gear is very helpful in a rescue before it turns into a recovery. And DON"T hike in the ICE and SNOW solo. We are still missing a PCT hiker near San Jac from last year for that reason.

I know that several pct hikers this year are considering travel
insurance through worldnomads.com I had some questions about wording
in the full policy disclosure and decided to ask for a clarification.
Here is their response. Basically you will not be covered for medical
or evacuation while hiking the PCT.
I just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention before policies are
bought. Please contact them if you have any questions.

Hi Aaron
Thanks for your email.
As per the policy wording, if you are camping, hiking or backpacking
this does need to be arranged by a recognized company in order to be
covered. If this is not the case, then unfortunately any costs
associated with these activities, including medical and evacuation,
would not be covered. Apologies!
Your friends that have purchased coverage with us for this purpose are
welcome to contact us with any further questions they might have; as our
policies changed at the end of last year, depending on when they bought
their policy they may or may not be covered.
Kind regards
World Nomads
