My wife and I are planning a JMT hike this August and in an effort to
lighten the pack i am considering modifying a single rectangular sleeping bag to
accomodate two people. I am thinking of using nylon fabric as a base and draping
the open bag on top of us. I will install a zipper on the nylon so we can
zip ourselves in but still either of us will be able to zip or unzip our
side. I am using a synthetic 30 degree bag and closed cell foam 3/4 length
sleeping pads. My questions: has anyone done anything like this? will we be warm
enough at high altitude in the Sierras? My feeling is that a 30 degree bag is a
little light but with 2 bodies it should compensate. I know we could get
close to the same weight with 2 down mummies but I can't stand sleeping in a
mummie bags. Also we will be using a Henry Shires squall 2 tent. Any comments or
suggestions are welcome
