[pct-l] RE: fuel canisters

Fuel usage depends on many factors, including:
--cooking style (boil only or simmer long times)
 --stove brand
 --windscreen use

I simmer my dinners for at least 15 to minutes and boil water for tea (1/2 quart) 2x per day, use a Vaude (aka the Markill, aka the Northern Lights Alpha Ti) stove, and always, always use a windscreen. I was able to get a good 4.5 days out of a 4 oz canister on some long PCT sections. I had no trouble mailing my canisters ground - but I recommend (as others did) to ship them separately - that way you will get your main items. I also was able to pick up partial canisters (and sometimes full) at the hiker boxes because everyone was trying to get their fuel usage dialed in. You can also always mix it up and send yourself an 8 for a long section and a 4 for a shorter one.

Check out all the reviews and articles on canister stoves (and alcohol) and windscreens on Backpackinglight.com; includes discussions on efficiency, etc.

 Good Luck!
