We used the Pentax s40 which I think is an older version of the s5i. IIRC 
the single digit models (s3, s4, s5) use a propreitary rechargeable battery 
whereas the s30,40,50 use AA's.  Using AA batteries you don't need to worry 
about bouncing a charger up the trail and finding somewhere to use it.  With 
lithium AAs (or a CRV3) we could get at least 400 shots, usually with the 
screen on, flash on maybe 25%, so we never needed more than one spare 
battery.

The pentax lens seemed pretty good - even at full resolution I can't see any 
problems with the pictures. Then again, that might be true of all digital 
cameras for me...
