Hi, Donna & Jeff!
Lady J and I sure enjoyed our brief but memorable visit with you two! What
a superhuman blessing you are to the pct community!
We have two trips running in January which I would not encourage for you.
Jan. and Feb. offer great weather and snow conditions for those interested in
true winter mountaineering challenges (deep, soft snow and avalanche danger).
It's a good opportunity, though, to begin getting acquainted with your
snow-camping skills in general (like safe snow travel, creek crossings, winter
navigation, water acquisition, snow caving, tent cooking, sweat control, and the
winter diet).
You might wish to take part in Clinics operating more toward the early
spring when snow and weather conditions are more like what you may see on your own
trip. At this time the snow is more compact and safer (few avalanches),
creeks are still covered, lakes can be skied over, the air is warmer, and ice
can be found for edge control and self arrest practice.
Let us know what weekend you want to go and how many are coming and we'll
create a trip custom-tailored for PCT hikers! Remember, this is basic training
in winter mountaineering and camping skills designed for the non-climber
enthusiasts. We hope to give you the necessary experience to alleviate any
fears you might have regarding snow camping and travel over lakes, streams, and
high passes.
