Let me float a question to get input from folks who do trail maintenance.
Through-hikers are among the earliest season hikers, often hiking on trails
still partially or fully covered in snow. When the whole trail is covered in
deep snow, obviously it is impossible to stay on the trail. My question
relates to trails with rapidly receeding snow, some patches clear, most
covered. It seems through-hiker common practice to just point downhill (and
to some extent uphill) in such areas, possibly with considerable erosion.
My question to trail maintenance folks: is this a problem that the PCT
community needs to discuss?
