The Garmin can load topographic maps, but they have to be Garmin's version
and not Topo! or Delorme. Most of the GPS map software uses NavTeq roads but
often trail detail is lacking. Still, when used with a regular paper topo
they can do a fine job.
I am hopeful the next version of the PCT guide has a GPS grid on the maps,
and more hopeful they use the user-friendly UTM instead of the old-fashioned
degrees.
Still, in normal conditions you don't need a GPS on the PCT unless you want
one. Of course, I appreciated having it in the snow in April above Big Bear
and one January in the snow in Landers Meadow.

Expecting my new Magellan eXplorist 600 with topo software soon.
