Unfortunately local culture is not about the options you're seeking. But if you're in LA proper, one of the greatest jewels is the Central Library (IMHO). It's worth visiting and is a great place to spend endless hours. Also, the phone directory has a "places to go" section that you might want to peruse. There are lots of options and suggetions in there that will be local to wherever you are.
For some reason, all of my out of town friends and relatives all want to see Venice Beach, although I find they're far more impressed with the drive up the coast on PCH. We usually take a leisurely cruise up to the Ventura County line, to ultimately stop at Neptune's Net and have chowder, crab legs, and peel & eat shirmp, and watch the surfers and the bikers. Along the way you see Malibu, beautiful beaches and coastline, breathtaking hills and canyons. There is hiking and beach access at various places. I'd also recommend driving up Malibu Canyon. This little jaunt is the quintessential southern California scene, IMHO.
Have fun whatever you choose.

I'm farting around LA now. Is there any must see attractions I got to see while here? I'm at the Aquarium of the Pacific now. Is there any mountaineering\skiing museums, gear manufacturing tours, or thur-hiking shrines?
