My third grade music teacher at Lincoln Grade School taught us that Waltzing
Matilda was the national anthem of Australia and that a Matilda was a
hangman"s rope and to "waltz with matilda" refered to...I think the medical term is
the agonal kicking of the legs that happens when the hangmans rope is tied to
the back of the neck...in which case one dies of slow strangulation...as
opposed to the side of the neck...where one's neck is snapped.
I later lost $20 on the subject...
I know what you're all thinking, but it was in the middle of the cold
war...and we kids had been especially naughty that day. And actually the small
twitching can be a real advantage at times.
And Mrs. Music loved us...really...except when we were bad. That made here
real sad...when she needed to punish us.
