[pct-l] Down Sweater
I can't say much to nunatuk, though I hear they are good, but I can tell
you my experience with a patagonia down sweater that I carried in '05.
First and foremost, know that you won't want to use it under a rain
jacket unless the jacket is absolutely bombproof. I had the marmot
precip, a pretty waterproof jacket, and I quickly learned that it gets
too damp on the inside to wear down under it. Plus, the other thing is,
for me, wearing the down jacket ever while hiking was a bad call because
I quickly overheated and stunk it up - something I strove not to do
during the whole trip.
That said, I would not hike without a down jacket. Once you get to camp,
there's nothing warmer per weight to put on, and no matter how cold you
are, it just feels great to be big and fluffy. On warm nights, nothing
makes a better pillow.
As for worries about it getting wet while in the pack, I kept it inside
a silnylon stuff sack inside a silnylon pack. I kept the seams of the
stuff sack pointed downwards, and it never got wet remotely wet, even
with weeks of water in washington, and pack submersions in the sierras.
And there you have it.
