In the online 1945 guide book, "The Pacific Crest Trailway", there is a
great retro-gear list on pages 53 and 54... 41lbs 10oz dry wt, 65+lbs with
14 days of food. And some gear tips are listed on the next few pages. Trail
Tip24 states: "On steep climbs wear tennis shoes. Hobnails slip on smooth
granite." Tip7 states "From 12:00 noon to 1:00 rest, laying flat on back in
the sun; lunch with a hot drink.." Both still very good tips for today's
hikers.

full of spicy odors with plenty of wind-played needles to sing me
asleep." --John Muir
