Having spent more than 40 years as a "7-mile a day poet" and only the past  4 
as a "multi-month mile slave,"  I can tell you that the pleasures are  *not* 
mutually exclusive.  And... certainly your prejudices ( read that  without 
negative connotations) show.  I can tell you that, as a 7 mile a  day poet with a 
45# pack, I spent many days less relaxed than a multi-month mile  slave, in 
great shape and  doing  a 25 mile day with a 20# pack.
