[pct-l] Why We Hike

Yep.

I know some of the reasons I hike: love of nature,
tendancies toward solitude, getting sweaty and dirty,
seeing a new vista, the pure movement of it, to escape
the city, to feel my breath and my heart, because the
people I meet on the trail are usually friendly.

I know some of the reasons I'll be attempting a thru
hike next year. My desire to do it probably has
additional motivators I'm not even really aware of. I
expect it to be a life changing experience. I expect
it to be a true adventure, complete with pitfalls,
setbacks, drama, joy, adrenaline, comraderie, etc. I
expect to have things I would never imagine happening,
happen.

When people learn of my plans, I get a lot of the same
questions:

what will you do for food?
are you going alone?
how long will it take?
Why are you doing that?

Most of the questions I have answers for. But when
they ask me "why?", I'm not quite sure where to begin.

I suspect that many-a-thru-hiker have restless souls
and a case of wanderlust.
