Give him the trail angels' numbers -- at least the significant angels along the way where you'll be sure to stop, and especially where you're sending a box. Rangers generally don't have a clue -- no offense to all of our ranger friends out there, but keeping track of hikers isn't something that they do. Post Offices have policies about holding boxes for limited periods of time, and may send the box back and therefore not know whether the hiker came through or not. The PCTA can't track the hikers either. So, IMHO, your best bet is angels -- we have a loose network and do (and have) contacted each other to see if a particular hiker has been spotted. In fact, that is how we realized that John Donovan was missing this year -- Ziggy at Camp Anza called me.
It's not much, but it's all there is.

Subject: [pct-l] Reporting Lost Hiker?
Hello,
Just a quick question that I haven't yet found the answer to. I'm planning
on hiking the PCT in 2006. I plan on getting a permit and notifying my
brother of when I will be departing and arriving at each "leg" of my
journey. My question is, should I fail to report at the specified time, who
should my brother report me missing to? Obviously I plan on giving myself
plenty of time before I go "missing" to get to the next stopping point. Just
wondering if I had to give my brother a list of numbers (i.e. various Park
Ranger offices) or if there was one single number, and if so what might that
number be?
Thanks,
Chai Guy
