[pct-l] Oregon and Beyond State hike and rambling thoughts

Good morning, Shutterbugg,

Welcome back to the (un)real world. I certainly agree with your enthusiasm
about the area, particularly Mt. Jefferson. Back in the 'mid-1960s I moved
to a small town near Salem, and began to poke around in the near-by
Cascades. At that time I didn't have decent maps so I would just drive up
the Santiam Highway and look for trailhead signs, or drive to the end of
sideroads and see if a trail continued toward the mountain. Soon I got a
Forest Service map of the area around Jefferson, but before the Wilderness
Act, it was known as the "Mt. Jefferson Primitive Area". I still have a
copy of that map, the latest version of which is dated 1968, and it is
printed with the quotation shown below.

I was there just last weekend shuttling Ajax and his fianc?e for their hike
from Olallie Lake to McKenzie Pass, and every time I near that mountain I
feel like I'm home. Particularly impressive is the view from the north
where Mt. Jefferson and Jefferson Park appear suddenly and in full panorama
as soon as you best Park Ridge. Unfortunately, NoBo hikers don't get that
introduction to the mountain.

Jefferson Park was relatively well-used even in those days, so for some
additional solitude I often camped well east on Indian land. Tisk, Tisk.

"If I were asked which of all the varied features of the Cascade Range in
Oregon offers the strongest appeal to the real lover of the out-of-doors, I
should find no alternative but to reply, without hesitation or tremor of
voice, the Mt. Jefferson region. The cause for it's acknowledged appeal
must be sought at close range, and will be found only by those who are able
to visit the mountains, who study its features, and particularly its
surroundings."

Going around HOOD, JEFFERSON, and the SISTERS was awesome.

I would love to spend about two weeks around Jefferson or the Sisters == I
shall return.
