I am planning a leave of absence next year to (amongst other things) hike the Sierras, JMT sobo from the Valley to KM. I've already decided that if corporate winds up saying no, I'll quit in time to execute my plans. Would be sorry to have to do that, but will if necessary. I know that choice is not one that everyone can make, but the desire compels me and outweighs all other considerations.
My heart goes out to you. If I were in a situation where I didn't have a choice (which has been all my life up until now), and they took my greatly anticipated time away from me, I would be filled with sadness and a fair amount of resentment. I would have a real hard time being motivated to perform at my best professionally when the time I hoped to be gone rolled around. Hang in there.
Too bad we don't have a system that's more European, where companies shut down for the summer and go "on holiday." For that matter, I'm all for taking siestas during the work day too. Click & Clack from Car Talk were supporting a national "slackers" movement last year, on the premise that the Europeans' work year essentially would end in October if they worked straight through, so we Americans should start goofing off early in the year to catch up.
Check out this site; I think it's something that those who do long distance hiking can relate to!

I'd quit. Actually, I am going to quit next month to hike the JMT. Not that
my job was any good to begin with.
