A summer thunderstorm unleashed over the mountains and deserts last night,
dropping record rainfall on the area before retreating.

The storm dumped 2.3 inches of rain on Mount Laguna in just under 40
minutes, according to the National Weather Service.

Although the weather service issued a flash flood warning yesterday, only
one spot of flooding was reported, near Julian, which received 0.65 inches
of rain in the storm.

That was nearly twice the record amount of rain recorded in 1988. Campo
also got record rainfall of .32 inches, besting its 1974 record of .24 inches.

"There was plenty of lightning with those storms," said forecaster Steven
Vanderburg.

A slight chance of lightning and thunderstorms is predicted today and
tomorrow for the deserts and mountains of San Diego County and possibly
reaching as far west as Valley Center, Vanderburg said. "It's started to
wind down, but we could have some nasty storms," he said.

The storm system could also bring hail and strong gusty winds before
tapering off later in the week, according to the weather service.

Today and tomorrow should be cloudy with patchy fog along the coast, where
temperatures should reach 75 degrees, while cloudy mornings are predicted
for the valleys where the days could heat up to 90 degrees. The desert high
could reach 104 degrees.
