Just saw an interview on Fox news of a young man, Andrew Skurka, who hiked 7700 across the US in 11 months. He's an educated fellow with two degrees: political science and economic. He received tremendous support from family and appeared to use a fair amount of technical devices, i.e., a transponder in case he was injured and/or lost.  He  has a web page I've yet to read: AndrewSkurka.com. Hope this isn't old news.
