I hiked a trail in Penna that goes from the Grand Canyon of New York to  
Maryland I believe it is called the Mid State Trail. It ran across several trail  
in that area that were financed by breweries and soda companies. What they 
would  do have part of the can with their label on and it became the trail blaze  
marker.  This would finance trail maintenance and maybe a few cases of  beer.
