The self-serve permit system at the trailheads in Washington is
specifically *not* used to verify hiker safety or to trigger search and
rescue.  It says so right on the permit box.

If you want someone to be aware of your whereabouts and to start a
search in case you don't show up - someone you know would definitely be
the best choice.
