[pct-l] South into Manning

Where's a good place way up north to hop on the trail and hike into Manning on about the 20th?

I hear the Northern tip of the trail is covered with snow and might be difficult to navigate.

I arrive in Seattle Thursday morning which gives me highway 5 to run up and down.

What options are there.  Maybe Castella, maybe Ashland(but what about snow at Crater Lake?)
Farther North??  
Anyone seen the trails?
