I used a shirt with an impregnated chemical, think it was permathrin or a
relative made by Exofficianado called Buzz Off, I would sit at breaks and
watch the little blighters land on me, without fail they would try and get
through the shirt, but always 'buzzed off' without  success, at least while
the shirt was new .  It was less effective after a few weeks of sweat and
grime  and the occasional launder, but it might be enough to finish your
hike. You can get long trousers with the  same treatment, but you'll need to
be comfortable wearing them if it's hot, you'll also need a headnet. I did
try deet which is equally effective, but  I hated the mess  involved and
also was concerned about using it around  food, which is the time you are
most likely to need protection when you are stopped and trying to eat!

The only thing that repels PCT mosquitos is DEET or lots of clothing.
Use anything else and you'll go insane.

I'm busy doing research on mosquito repellents, etc., as I've decided
to scrap my July JMT hike in favor of hiking Oregon from mid-July to
mid-August. I'm hoping that's just barely late enough to miss the
worst of the mosquitoes, but still intend to carry the best mosquito
stuff I can find. Anyone have any advice for me about hiking Oregon
NoBo at that time?? Reply offline unless you think everyone wants to
know.
