I used no chemicals what-so-ever on my hike, only a head-net
and mosquito proof wind suit or long sleeve cap shirt (very minimal clothing). 
I also slept in this attire at night with no ill effects. My sanity (twitch, twitch) 
is just fine. :)

But then again,  I hiked the trail over 2 summers...
