[pct-l] ADZPCTKO . . .

I'm too new to this community to pretend that I have well-formed ideas,
but after reading the other posts on this thread, this seemed like an
obvious option:

Why not move the kick-off back just a couple of weeks? Currently, the
kick-off seems to be in early-to-middle of the regular starting window
each spring. So those that want to start early can do so and get a ride
back and everyone else has to choose between starting at the kick-off
(and maybe killing some time down the trail) or missing the party.

By having the kick-off nearer the end of the window, hikers could start
anytime during the preceding couple of weeks and then plan to travel
back for the kick-off if they want to attend.

I'm sure there will still be some bunching around the kick-off, but I
honestly think more people would start before the kick-off than after.
Who is going to travel all the way to San Diego, go to the kick-off, and
then decide to kill a couple weeks hanging around town?

Once again, just my $0.02...

Subject: [pct-l] Early Kickoff ideas

Here's more to add to my idea for an early kickoff.
I'm talking early. In the winter. In the mountains, with snow around.

At a scout camp or YMCA camp with bunkhouse type facilities and big
indoor gathering areas for talks and demos and celebrations.
Also a steep snow slope nearby where an ice-ax self arrest class can be
conducted and people can practice. This could save a life. Let's
persuade Jon Vonhof to give his excellent foot care lecture which
was such a highlight of ALDHA-West last fall.
Vendors could sell more gear, as the thrus wouldn't have all their gear
yet, and could even take orders for gear they could make and deliver
before the hiking season starts.
Two more cents.
