[pct-l] RE: [BULK] - [so_california_backpackers] Hiking Idyllwild - Car Broken Into!

Very cool!

OK! Heads up everyone!
Check out the conditions report for San Jacinto/Saddle
Junction/Wellmans!

Nick- I was talking to Dave Saturday about the prospects of bagging San
Jac with snow. I was afraid of the snow covered scramble above the hut.
Particularly at the summit. I wouldn't want to mis-step on any of those
boulders at the top...

Broken Into!

There is still quite a bit of snow up at saddle. It starts about 1/2
mile prior to the junction, and I would estimate 12 - 18 inches at
saddle, becoming patchy as you move toward Welmans divide. At about
9000' it becomes a nice deep pack, maybe 2 - 4 feet yet. We did San
Jacinto peak last weekend (April 2) via Humber park, and there was so
much snow at the top, it was amazing. I will post the peak house shot
and the peak in a few minutes. Also, you probably don't need snow shoes
to make it to the top because the snow has firmed up quite a bit, but
you will need something when you go down (crampons more than likely).
It was really sketchy coming down off the peak - no trail and very
slippery snow makes for a dangerous time.

Yeah, unfortunate about the break in, but I just wanted to give everyone
traveling that area an FYI so that it doesn't happen to any of us again!

I am going to post pictures now!

Thanks,

-Nick
