I suppose anyone that's serious about doing a thru-hike this year is pretty much
committed and isn't seriously thinking of delaying until next year because of
snow levels, but on the off chance that someone is, here's what the Sierra snow
records have to say:
With one exception, every heavy snow year since 1975 has been followed by a year
in which the snow was "normal" or less, where "normal" is defined as the Upper
Tyndall sensor reading zero by mid-June or earlier. Here's the data:
1978 7/23
1979 6/8
1980 7/18
1981 5/14
1982 6/26
1983 7/28
1984 6/8
1993 6/29
1994 6/4
1995 7/10
1996 6/11
1998 7/19
1999 6/18
(It could be argued that 1997 and 1999 were heavy snow years since the "zero
day" for the sensor was 6/18. That would make two cases where a heavy year was
followed by a second, and in the case of 1997, a third heavy year.)
