I have never been bit (>30 years backpacking and other outdoor
activities), my dad was never bit (>50 years backpacking and outdoor
activities)... Hmmm, actually no one I know has ever been bit.  I have
seen / been scared by snakes a number of times... but I always either
backed-up or ran past before the encounter turned ugly.

Remember that stat I mentioned earlier... more people are killed each
year in the USA by lightning than snake bites.  Don't know anyone who
has been killed by either.  I do know one person who have been hit by
lightning backpacking which is 100% more than the number of people I
know who have been bitten.  [Morale of that story.. don't cross a high
pass in a thunderstorm carrying a large aluminum tube which is
protecting your fly rod.]
