[pct-l] SoBo start dates??
Usually June 15 - probably much earlier this year unless the weather changes
drastically. It will however still be cold up in the North Cascades and
you'll have the blow-down with which to contend.
CAVEAT: Once you leave Manning Park, the first available transportation is
at Stehekin, where you can catch The Lady of the Lake boat to Chelan, and
the free county bus system to Wenatchee, from which you can catch either an
airplane or Greyhound to Seattle.
If you are forced out at Harts Pass (your first possible bail-out point),
you will want to hitch a ride down to the town of Winthrop, just east of
Mazama (basically just a lodge with an expensive restaurant, small store,
and gas pumps). There is NO public transportation through Winthrop and a 150
mile hitch - almost impossible - west to Seattle. You had better plan to
return to Harts Pass and keep going south when whatever took you off-trail
clears up. My dear wife had to play cavalry and drive 6 hours from Portland
just to rescue my soggy posterior from Winthrop the year the heavy storms
forced even the locals out of the mountains. Winthrop's a fun town, like
Etna, but not worth the long detour unless forced to do so.
