Amazing, not one pct-l posting from 1 AM - 7 AM Central. Here in the Big
Bend, it's tourist season, along with Spring Break. The motor homes and
5th-wheelers trundle slowly through town, spending their money and moving on, thank
God. The rv parks in town fill up; the campgrounds in Big Bend NP fill up; the
popular designated camp sites in the High Chisos almost fill up, but some of
us know where to hike and see no one.
On the PCT there's almost no one; all is quiet - until 5 weeks from now.
Then a plague of locusts will move northward from the Border, devouring all
the water in sight, even the water put out by natives in a vain attempt to
placate them. Some of them will die along the way, realizing sooner or later
they should have never been a locust. Six weeks later, the tougher ones will
seep up the valleys into the snow, where fewer will die, and water is more
abundant. Even fewer will make it through the snow to run once again into
parched, waterless conditions ....
Ah, what the hell, I'm just bored - and waiting, waiting ...
