[pct-l] emergency contact

Scott Williamson did something I found very helpful and informative. He would update his voicemail message on his cell phone with where he was, how it was going, what the conditions were, etc., whenever he could get good reception (which of course, is patchy no matter what service you have excepting satellite perhaps). That way, anyone wanting to know his progress could check the voicemail and know fairly closely where he was.

The Post Office that serves Agua Dulce is 20 miles away and is very large -- the majority of the folks who work there are unaware of the PCT and thru-hiker traffic (although our carrier is an absolute hero taking care of hiker packages). Consequently, I don't think the POs would be willing to take this on globally, although the smaller ones might.

Subject: [pct-l] emergency contact

Does anyone have experience of being contacted while on the trail regarding a family emergency? Would phone numbers for Post Offices along the trail be effective for family members to get an emergency message to a thru-hiker when they pick up their resupply?
