An option I used was dropping off a one way rental car from Avis at
Ridgecrest. Not too bad a hitch for a Sunday afternoon. If you have a
cellphone and an appointment, they will probably pick you up from the
junction of the 395 and Inyokern Rd. because the did indeed drop me off
there to hitch back to Whitney Portal.
